Shared History

Many were unsettled in 2020 by events associated with the Covid pandemic and civil unrest. So were we. Consequently, a group of civic volunteers in our community came together with the mission of preserving and enhancing collaboration.
Many witnessed the drumbeat of toxic divisiveness that seemed to be everywhere. Many understood that the human collaborative spirit is vulnerable to fear and hate and that it must be protected. We understood that there are people who seek to divide us into separate packs, a sure path to community destruction.
Losing our capacity for collaboration would be a disaster for commerce and for our citizens. The Hidden Tribes of America study conducted by More in Common determined that 86% of Americans want collaboration and reject extreme voices. But they are not very visible. They don’t get much press. Let's change that. The goal of the Roanoke Collaborative Project is to give voice to the vast majority of people who are brave enough to listen to and learn from people who think and look differently from them.
More of our history is available in articles published by the Roanoke Times newspaper and Valley Business Front magazine.
